Periodontal Maintenance
It only takes twenty four hours for plaque left on your teeth to turn into calculus (tartar)! Daily home care helps control plaque and tartar, but hard-to-reach areas always need special attention.
Maintenance cleanings
Once your periodontal treatment is complete, we will usually recommend periodontal maintenance cleanings four times a year. At each visit we carefully check pocket depths to make sure they are healthy, and remove plaque and calculus from above and below the gum line that is hard to reach at home.

What the appointment includes
- Diagnostic x-rays (radiographs)Detect decay, tumors, cysts and bone loss; X-rays also show tooth and root positions.
- Existing restorationsCheck current fillings, crowns, etc.
- Tooth decayCheck all tooth surfaces for decay.
- Oral cancer screeningCheck the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheeks and gums for signs of oral cancer.
- Oral hygiene recommendationsRecommend oral hygiene aids as needed, such as electric toothbrushes, periodontal brushes, fluorides and rinses.
- Teeth polishingRemove stain and plaque that brushing and scaling leave behind.
Good oral hygiene and periodontal cleanings are essential to keeping periodontal disease under control!
