Dental X-Rays
Dental radiographs (X-rays) are preventive diagnostic tools that show what a regular exam can’t. They help your dentist and hygienist safely find hidden problems and plan treatment accurately; without them, problem areas may go undetected.
What dental X-rays may reveal
Finding and treating problems early can save you time, money, discomfort, and your teeth!
- Abscesses or cysts
- Bone loss
- Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
- Decay between the teeth
- Developmental abnormalities
- Poor tooth and root positions
- Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line
Are dental X-rays safe?
Yes. A full mouth series of X-rays gives about the same radiation you receive in a single day from natural sources. Dentists also limit exposure with lead apron shields and modern, fast film that shortens each X-ray.

How often should X-rays be taken?
It depends on your dental health. Your dentist and hygienist recommend X-rays based on your medical and dental history, exam, symptoms, age and risk of disease. New patients get a full mouth series, usually good for three to five years. Bite-wing X-rays (top and bottom teeth biting together) are taken at check-ups once or twice a year to catch new problems.
