TMJ Pain / TMD / Bite Guard

Relief for an aching jaw

TMJ pain is caused by a dysfunction of the jaw joint located in front of the ears. Left untreated, it can lead to chronic headaches, neck pain and migraines. We make custom bite guards to help alleviate symptoms of TMD.

Teeth grinding (bruxism)

Bruxism is grinding the teeth and clenching the jaw, day or night. It is one of the most common sleep disorders and does most of its damage while you sleep, straining the jaw muscles and joints. Common symptoms include earache, headaches and anxiety.

It often goes undiagnosed, because only a trained professional can tell grinding wear from wear caused by aggressive brushing, acidic soft drinks or abrasive foods.

Why grinding should be treated

Schedule an Appointment
  • Gum recession and tooth lossLoose teeth and deep pockets where bacteria destroy the supporting bone.
  • Worn chewing surfacesFractures that may need restorative treatment.
  • Jaw joint arthritisPainful arthritis in the TMJ joints, in severe, chronic cases.
  • Headaches and muscle painFrom teeth worn short and blunt.

Custom bite guards

An acrylic bite guard can be designed from impressions of your teeth to minimize the grinding of tooth surfaces during sleep. Bite guards should be worn on a long-term basis to help stabilize the bite and prevent damage to the teeth and to the temporomandibular joint.

There is no single cure for bruxism. Relaxation exercises and stress management can also help. Once the grinding is under control, dental treatments such as crowns can restore worn teeth.

Sports mouth guards

Mouth guards, also known as sports guards, are crucial for anyone taking part in sports or recreational activities that could cause injury. Fitting snugly over the upper teeth, they protect the entire mouth from traumatic injury, and they help reduce cheek, lip and tongue injuries, tooth fractures, jaw fractures and concussions.

There are three main types:

  • StockCheap and one-size-fits-all, but minimal protection, and often uncomfortable.
  • Boil-and-biteSoftened in hot water and pressed onto the teeth, for a better fit.
  • CustomMade by your dentist from an impression, for the most protection and comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I grind my teeth?

Grinding often happens during sleep, so many people don't know they do it. Worn teeth, headaches, earache and jaw pain are common signs. Tooth wear can have other causes too, which is why it needs to be checked by a professional.

Will a store-bought mouth guard work?

Store-bought guards provide less protection and a poorer fit than a guard custom-made from impressions of your teeth.
